The Philosophy

A naturopathic doctor does not target the disease entity. Instead, we treat the individual and rely upon the healing wisdom, vital energies and intelligence within them to restore normal, healthy function.

Health is the normal state of existence, should the internal and external environment support this existence.

Symptoms of dis-ease are an expression of the body’s attempt to heal itself; signs to bring our awareness inwards to a disturbance in healthy functioning. When an individual is in a state of dis-ease, healing is brought about by reducing the presence of obstacles to good health and enhancing and supporting the self healing processes.

This philosophy unites all naturopathic doctors and is reflected in the Naturopathic Doctor’s Oath:

I dedicate myself to the service of humanity as
a practitioner of the art and science of naturopathic medicine.
By precept, education and example, I will assist
and encourage others to strengthen their health,
reduce risks for disease, and preserve the health of our planet
for ourselves and future generations.
I will continually endeavour to improve my abilities.
I will conduct my life and practice of naturopathic medicine
with integrity and freedom from prejudice.

I will keep confident what should not be divulged.
I will honour the principles of naturopathic medicine:
First, do no harm.
Co-operate with the healing powers of nature.
Address the fundamental causes of disease.
Heal the whole person through individualized treatment.
Teach the principles of healthy living and preventative medicine.
With my whole heart, before these witnesses,
as a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine,
I pledge to remain true to this oath.
